When I left Germany for my solo trip in March 2016 I did not know what to expect. 11 days alone in Mexico for the first time and I was a little worried. Since I wanted to have some kind of a plan I decided to start my trip on Isla Mujeres, because there was an animal shelter to visit and puppies to cuddle.
Information about Isla Animals:
How can I help?
There are four tasks you can do while visiting Isla Animals, if you are not a vet:
- Walking dogs
When I visited Isla Animals there were about 15 puppies at the shelter – so there was to do. I helped with cleaning and grooming (Puppy Burritos) and walked some dogs.
Blue eyed puppy:
Nope, the program is free. Just show up and offer your help. Of course it is always a good idea to give some money or buy a t-shirt to support the project.
What can I expect?
Just look at the picture. Nothing more to say.
- “Hello there“- Charming puppy2. Isla Mujeres
How do I get there?
This is super easy: Starting in Cancun just take the ferry to Isla Mujeres- this takes 20 minutes and costs 70 Pesos. If you are all settled in at your hostel you should rent a bike because the shelter is located in the less touristy part of the island and is right next to the Mundaca Parque in La Gloria. The easiest way is to use Google Maps or to ask someone. It’s not a long ride.
Where can I stay?
There are only two hostels on Isla Mujeres:
- PocNac: this one is bigger and offers a lot of activities and live music. It is more of a party hostel.
- I stayed at Hostel Azucar and was very happy there. It’s smaller and I really liked the atmosphere.
The shelter is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am till 2 pm. You don’t need anything except water and time.
